Universal Modder
Universal Modder is an open-source set of agent skills, a command-line tool (um) and a shared knowledge base that turns an AI coding agent such as Claude Code into a game-modding agent. You describe the mod in plain English; the agent identifies the game, picks a modding route, writes the mod, generates art and audio, and tests it in the running game. The repository appeared on GitHub on September 30, 2026 and went viral in early October.
Official repo: rehan-remade/universal-modder
- What: agent skills + the
umCLI + a fal MCP server + a knowledge base of field notes. It is not a standalone app and not a mod loader. - Install in Claude Code:
/plugin marketplace add rehan-remade/universal-modderthen/plugin install universal-modder@universal-modder. - Works with: Claude Code, Codex, Gemini CLI, Cursor, VS Code / Copilot, OpenCode, or any agent that reads
AGENTS.md. - Needs: Git, Python 3.10+ and ffmpeg.
uvis recommended; Blender only for 3D-to-sprite renders. - Cost: the toolkit is free and MIT licensed. AI-generated assets use fal, a paid API, with your own
FAL_KEY. - Scope: single-player games you own. It refuses anti-cheat-protected online games, multiplayer cheats and DRM bypasses.
What is Universal Modder?
The project’s own tagline is “Point Claude at any game.” The README describes it as skills, tools and the fal MCP that let Claude Code mod almost any PC game you own, covering recon, reverse engineering, fal-generated art, 3D and audio, in-game testing and showcase videos.
It helps to be clear about what it is not. Universal Modder does not replace mod loaders. Tools such as tModLoader, Fabric, BepInEx or UE4SS still do the low-level work of getting code into a game. What the toolkit adds is the knowledge an agent needs to choose the right loader and route for each engine, plus the commands to generate assets, drive the game and check the result.
“Universal” is also an ambition rather than a guarantee. Coverage depends on the engine, on whether the game has anti-cheat, and on how much the agent can learn from the game’s code. Reviewers describe many results as proofs of concept rather than polished mods.
What is in the box
| Part | What it does |
|---|---|
| Agent skills | 12 skills, led by mod-any-game (the full workflow, safety rules and engine playbooks), plus recon, reverse engineering, asset generation, in-game automation, video and publishing skills. |
um CLI | Scans your game library, generates and processes assets, renders 3D to sprites, drives Windows games, backs up saves, checks a mod before publishing. |
| fal MCP server | Lets the agent generate sprites, textures, 3D models, sound effects, music, voice and video through fal. Needs your own FAL_KEY. |
| Knowledge base | Field notes written by agents after each mod, searchable with um kb search. A third-party article on Oct 13, 2026 counted 117 game notes and 65 technique guides. |

In Claude Code:/plugin marketplace add rehan-remade/universal-modder, then/plugin install universal-modder@universal-modder. Commands for other agents are on the install page. - Set a fal key (optional)
export FAL_KEY=...if you want AI-generated art, models or audio. Without a key,um comfycan generate images through a local ComfyUI server. - Scan your games
um scanfinds installs and fingerprints each game: engine, version, anti-cheat, loaders and save folders. - Describe the mod
Give the agent a mission in plain English and start small: one item, one enemy or one visual change. See the tutorial for the full loop.

Rules and limits
- Single-player first. It is meant for single-player games, and for multiplayer games or servers you host yourself.
- No cheating tools. The skills refuse to inject into online games with anti-cheat, to write cheats against other players, or to bypass anti-cheat, DRM or ownership checks.
- No game files. It never ships game files or decompiled code.
um publish checkblocks them, along with leaked API keys. - Asks first. It backs up saves before touching them and asks before driving your mouse and keyboard, installing loaders into game folders, or publishing anything.
- Windows-first. Game driving targets Windows, natively or from WSL. Reviewers note macOS-only users will struggle.
- Legal. Mixing or modifying proprietary game assets can raise copyright, trademark and terms-of-service questions. Check each game’s modding policy.

FAQ
Is Universal Modder free?
The skills, CLI and knowledge base are free and MIT licensed. You pay for two things outside the project: your AI coding agent (for example a Claude plan), and fal usage if you generate assets with it. The project does not publish a typical cost per mod; um fal price shows prices before you run a batch.
Do I need a fal.ai key?
Only for fal-generated sprites, textures, 3D models, sound and video. Recon, reverse engineering and code-only mods work without one, and um comfy can generate images through a local ComfyUI server instead.
Does Universal Modder work with any game?
No. It ships playbooks for many engines, but results depend on the game, and it deliberately avoids anti-cheat-protected online games. See supported games.
Does it work without Claude Code?
Yes. The README has install steps for Codex, Gemini CLI, VS Code / Copilot, Cursor and OpenCode, and a skills-only install for any other agent.
Can I use it for online or multiplayer games?
Not for games protected by anti-cheat, and not to gain an advantage over other players. Multiplayer is in scope only for servers you host.
Is it safe for my saves?
The workflow sets up a safe lab first: um backup snapshots, diffs and restores save folders. Using a separate test profile or world is still a good idea.
Does it run on macOS or Linux?
The CLI is Python, but game launching, screenshots and input (um win) target Windows, natively or via WSL. Official macOS support is not stated.
Who made Universal Modder?
It is published under the rehan-remade account on GitHub. Several forks exist; the original is rehan-remade/universal-modder.
Is there an official Universal Modder website?
We have not found one. The GitHub repository is the official source. This site is an unofficial guide.
